Description
This 1991 Volkswagen Golf GTI 16V was modified over several years by the seller for a prior owner beginning in 2003, and it was acquired by them in 2021. Rallye-style bodywork was added and the exterior was refinished in black, the 2.0-liter DOHC inline-four was rebuilt and turbocharged, and a Passat Syncro-sourced transaxle and all-wheel-drive system were fitted. Additional modifications include a Quaife limited-slip differential, 17″ Rotiform wheels, Wilwood calipers, Koni coilover suspension, Corbeau bucket seats trimmed in two-tone black and gray upholstery, a Corrado-sourced dashboard, and more as detailed below. This modified Mk2 GTI is now offered with service and modification records, an accident-free Carfax report, and an Ohio title in the seller’s name.
Rallye-style bodywork with fiberglass bumpers and steel fenders and rocker moldings was installed before the body was refinished in Black Magic Pearl according to the seller. Additional exterior equipment includes a front spoiler, a sunroof, a custom rear diffuser, a rear spoiler with an integrated third brake light, a custom hood with louvers, a shaved hatch, tinted tail lights, and European-style H4 headlights. The seller notes corrosion on the inner fenders and rocker moldings.
Black-finished 17×8.5″ Rotiform wheels are mounted with 245/40 Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 tires at each corner. The suspension is modified with Koni adjustable coilovers, and stopping power comes from 12″ front brake discs paired with black-finished Wilwood calipers.
The front Corbeau bucket seats are trimmed in black with gray perforated inserts, and matching upholstery covers the rear bench and door panels. Other interior modifications include a Corrado-sourced dashboard and console, a roll hoop mounted in the rear cargo area, a Clifford alarm system, a battery relocation kit, and an Alpine CD stereo hooked to a JL Audio amplifier, subwoofer, and 11 speakers. The seller states that the headliner was recently replaced, that sound deadening material is installed throughout the interior, and that the rear floor was removed and a crossmember installed to support the replacement rear subframe and a fuel cell.
The four-spoke steering wheel is mounted on a tilting column and frames Corrado-sourced gauges consisting of a 140-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, gauges for coolant temperature and fuel level, and a digital clock. An A-pillar-mounted Innovate Motorsports digital gauge shows air/fuel ratio, and auxiliary gauges mounted beneath the climate controls include a pyrometer, and readouts for oil pressure, boost pressure, oil temperature, and battery voltage. The mechanical odometer shows 110k miles, 250 of which were added by the seller, though total mileage is unknown.
The 2.0-liter DOHC inline-four is modified with the following components:
- ABA block
- Ported and polished 1.8L 16-valve cylinder head
- Garrett GTX3071R turbocharger
- Forged crankshaft
- ARP head studs
- Wiseco forged pistons
- 1,000lph fuel injectors
- 034 Motorsports engine management software
- Extrudabody EFI individual throttle bodies
- Custom aluminum intake manifold
- Front-mounted intercooler
- Ram-air intake system with a recirculating blow-off valve
- Aluminum fluid tanks
Power is sent to all four wheels through a modified five-speed manual transaxle with a Quaife helical limited-slip differential and a Passat-sourced Syncro all-wheel-drive system, and the seller states that a Passat-sourced center tunnel was also fitted to accommodate the all-wheel drive system. Additional modifications include a Stage 3 clutch kit with a single-mass flywheel, a ceramic-coated downpipe with a TiAL 35mm internal wastegate, and a 3″ stainless-steel exhaust system with two resonators and a muffler. A custom exhaust evacuation breather system with a catch can is also fitted.
