Description

This 1987 Volkswagen Golf GTI 16V is a Canadian-market example that was purchased by the seller in 2014 for use in that year’s Targa Newfoundland rally, and it is powered by a replacement 2.0-liter 16V inline-four paired with a five-speed manual transaxle. Repainted in red over a gray and black interior, it is further equipped with 15″ BBS wheels, FK Konigsport shocks, an aftermarket exhaust system, quad headlights, fog lights, a sunroof, and Corbeau fixed-back front seats. Placed into storage following the rally, the seller reports carrying out recommissioning work since 2022 that consisted of changing the oil and coolant along with replacing the clutch, rear main seal, speedometer cable, shift linkage, oil-pressure senders, fueling and braking components, and more as detailed below. Registered in Ontario since new, this GTI is now offered at no reserve in Canada with spare wheels and front seats, a US Carfax report, and Ontario registration in the seller’s name.

The car was refinished in red under prior ownership, and bubbled paint is noted by the seller. Exterior details include quad round headlights, fog lights, a sunroof, a roof-mounted antenna, and a rear window wiper. An October 2001 entry on the Carfax report notes minor damage to the undercarriage, and dents in the left-side door are shown in the gallery photos and videos below.

The leather-wrapped four-spoke steering wheel frames a 220-km/h speedometer, an 8k-rpm tachometer, and gauges for coolant temperature and fuel level, and the coolant-level indicator remains flashing after startup. The mechanical six-digit odometer indicates 156k kilometers (~97k miles), approximately 6k of which were added under current ownership. An October 2014 entry on the Carfax report notes a potential odometer rollback, and the speedometer cable was replaced in 2022. Total mileage is unknown.
