Description
This 1990 Volkswagen Golf GTI 16V was sold new at Southgate Volkswagen of Edmonton, Alberta and spent time in British Columbia before being recently acquired by the seller. Finished in red over a gray interior, the car is powered by a 2.0-liter 16-valve inline-four mated to a five-speed manual transaxle. Features include 15″ BBS wheels, disc brakes, Recaro seats, a strut tower brace, an aftermarket Panasonic stereo, and more. This GTI shows 161k kilometers (~100k miles) and is offered at no reserve with a clean Carfax report and Ontario registration.
The body is finished in red and was reportedly repainted some time ago during previous ownership. The car is not equipped with a sunroof, and exterior features include quad headlamps, black body trim and wheel flares, and a rear window wiper. A section of the floor has reportedly been patched, and the seller notes rust around the headlamps, windshield, driver’s side rear wheel flare, passenger side quarter panel, and below the rear hatch.
15″ BBS basketweave wheels are mounted with older tires that should be replaced due to age. Braking is handled by power-assisted discs all around. Factory power steering components have been removed, and a strut tower brace has been added up front.
The interior features two-tone gray Recaro sport seats with a matching dash, carpeting, and door panels with contrasting red accents. A Panasonic head unit with a CD receiver has been added, and the A/C components have been removed. The front seats have reportedly been swapped positions, and the seller notes a tear in the passenger’s side seat bolster as well as cracks in the dash.
A leather-wrapped steering wheel fronts instrumentation including a 260-km/h speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, and gauges monitoring fuel and coolant temperature levels. The six-digit odometer shows just under 161k kilometers (~100k miles), approximately 500 of which have been added by the seller, who notes that the water temperature light flashes after the vehicle has warmed up.
The 2.0-liter 16V inline-four was factory-rated for 134 horsepower and 5,800-rpm, which is sent to the front wheels through a five-speed manual transaxle. The timing belt was replaced in September 2020 at 160k kilometers according to a sticker located in the engine bay. The seller notes corrosion below the battery, a broken timing belt cover, and broken exhaust hangers.
