Description
This 1988 Volkswagen Golf GTI 16V is a European-market example that is said to have spent time in Spain and Germany before it was acquired by the seller and imported to the US in 2020. The car is powered by a 16-valve 1.8-liter inline-four mated to a five-speed manual transaxle and is finished in red over gray cloth upholstery. Equipment includes 17” BBS LM wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, a manual sunroof, Recaro front seats, power windows and locks, and a Kenwood AM/FM CD stereo. Service under current ownership included replacing the valve cover gasket, intake manifold gasket, ignition distributor, and fuel accumulator. This MK2 GTI now shows 217k kilometers (~135k miles) and is offered with a set of Ronal wheels, import documents, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Texas title in the seller’s name.
The car is finished in red and features pinstriping on the grille, bumpers, and bodyside moldings. Exterior details include quadruple headlights, a front lip spoiler with integrated brake cooling ducts, 16V badging, a manual sunroof, wheel arch flares, an antenna, a rear spoiler, a rear wiper, and polished dual exhaust outlets. Red overspray is visible on the underside and blemishes are visible on the front valance.
Polished 17” BBS LM wheels are wrapped in 205/40 Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 tires showing 2020 date codes, and a space-saver spare is stowed in the cargo area. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel disc brakes.
The cabin features Recaro front seats and a rear bench upholstered in gray cloth. Additional interior details include a padded dashboard, a rear window defroster, a Kenwood AM/FM CD stereo, an aftermarket amplifier and speakers, and power windows and locks. The front seats show signs of wear, the pedals are worn, and the seller states that the power height-adjusters for the front seats do not work.
A four-spoke steering wheel frames VDO instrumentation including a 260-km/h speedometer, a tachometer with a 6,800-rpm redline, a coolant temperature gauge, a digital clock as well as shift and warning lights. The six-digit mechanical odometer shows 217k kilometers (~135k miles), approximately 200 of which were added by the seller.
The 1.8-liter DOHC 16-valve inline-four features Bosch Jetronic fuel injection and was rated at 137 hp and 124 lb-ft of torque when new. Service in February 2021 included replacing the valve cover gasket, intake manifold gasket, ignition distributor, and the fuel filter and accumulator.
Power is sent to the front wheels through a five-speed manual transaxle.
A set of 14″ Ronal wheels will accompany the car.
