Description
This 1992 Volkswagen Golf GTI is a highly modified example that was purchased by the seller in 2001 as a stock 16V. The car has since been fitted with the turbocharged 1.8L 20-valve four and a 5-speed manual transmission from a 2001 VW GTI. A repaint in Brilliant Black was carried out in 2008, and the tan interior is customized with many GTI Mk4 components as detailed below. The chassis has around 153k total miles, and additional modifications to the suspension, brakes, interior, and engine are detailed below. Servicing performed last month included an oil change and new battery. This unique GTI is now being offered with documentation covering the build, a clean AutoCheck report, and a clear Colorado title in the seller’s name.
The exterior was repainted in Brilliant Black (L041) in 2008 and fitted with new OEM parts including the hood, hood seal, rain tray covers, window seals, sunroof seal, bumpers, arches, skirts, door trim, side emblems, chin spoiler, headlights, grille, and front emblem. The fender marker lights, scuttle panel wiper hole, hood vents, rear wiper and sprayer, and rear emblem were all removed and a smooth rear hatch plinth from Cult Society was installed. Happich Sekurit pop out windows have new seals. The Hella taillights and fogs are tinted, as are the MHW side marker lights.
A single windshield wiper has been fitted using an SWG Motorsport arm cover. The 16×7.5” BBS RS 281 3-piece wheels are mounted using ECS Tuning 5×100 front hubs and 11.1″ rear rotors. They are shod with 205/40 Dunlop FM901 tires. The rear wheel arches were trimmed and welded for tire clearance.
The interior features a 2001 GTI Mk4 dash, gauges, wiring harness, pedals, telescoping steering column, steering wheel, and center console. A Dieselgeek short shifter has been added, and the seats and sun visors were reupholstered in tan leather. The headliner and pillars are covered with tan Alcantara. A 42 Draft Designs 3-gauge panel houses VDO oil temp, oil pressure, and boost gauges. The door panels were modified to work with the dash and have Focal speakers and one-touch power windows, while stainless door sills are etched with “Golf GTI” logos.
The rear speaker trays and parcel shelf were smoothed and have new carpeting. The custom hatch enclosure holds the subwoofer and amplifier for the Pioneer head unit. The seller notes that the air conditioning was deleted, the fuel gauge reads backward, and the airbags are not functional.
The turbocharged 1.8L 20-valve inline-four and 5-speed manual transmission were sourced from a 2001 VW GTI Mk4 with 41k miles. The timing belt, tensioner, and water pump were replaced prior to the swap, the secondary air injection system and coolant overflow tank were removed, and the intake manifold uses rerouted vacuum lines. The Mk4 wiring harness was trimmed and modified to retain the cruise control and drive-by-wire functions. Many parts have been chrome plated. The following components were used:
- Corrado G60 CV shafts, motor mount brackets, and radiator
- Techtonics Tuning HD motor mounts, 2.5″ downpipe with high-flow cat, and stainless exhaust with Borla muffler
- APR 91-octane chip and silicone turbo inlet pipe
- K&N cone filter
- Stainless braided fuel lines with Earls billet mounts
- Dahlback Racing diverter valve
- GTI Mk3 VR6 fuel tank and pump
- Odyssey battery relocated to hatch
- EIP Tuning Jaycaps billet oil cap
- Hayden 10” dual pusher radiator fans
- CSR Performance inline coolant filler neck
- Futrell Autowerks front mount intercooler
- Custom polished stainless steel boost tubes
The chassis has been modified with a Mason Tech Signature Series air ride system with 7-way manual switches operating in conjunction with Koni adjustable struts, R32 front control arm bushings, VR6 upper strut bearings, Autotech 25mm front sway bar, 28mm adjustable rear sway bar, Eibach front strut brace, and an RSD rear strut brace. The air suspension controls are mounted under the passenger airbag cover.
The undercarriage has new undercoating and the wheel wells were repainted, with some flaws noted from using a floor jack and stands. The 11.1″ Corrado G60 rotors are cross-drilled and use Audi calipers along with Hawk pads and stainless brake lines at all four corners. Braking power is provided by a Golf Mk4 brake booster and master cylinder, and the ABS system has been removed.
The AutoCheck report shows that the GTI has resided in Colorado from new and that it has had three owners, though the seller states he is the second owner. Over $50k is said to have been invested in the build, and the car has been featured in several enthusiast publications as shown in the gallery. It has been driven less than 1,000 miles since the work was completed in 2009.
