This 1985 Volkswagen Golf GTI is a Canadian-market example that was first sold by Intermonde Auto Inc. of Montreal, Quebec and remained in Canada until 2018, when it was imported to the US. Power comes from a fuel-injected 1.8L inline-four paired with a close-ratio five-speed manual transaxle, and the car is finished in Mars Red over gray cloth upholstery. Additional equipment includes front sport seats, 14″ alloy wheels, a Blaupunkt stereo, and a sunroof. Service during current ownership included performing a timing belt service as well as replacing the tires, CV boots, oil pan gasket, and more as described below. This first-year Mk2 GTI shows just over 59k kilometers (~37k miles) and is offered with owner’s manuals and original sales documentation, keys, historical literature, service records, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Michigan title in the seller’s name.

The car is finished in Mars Red (LA3A). Paintwork was performed on the left-rear valance under previous ownership, and existing imperfections in the finish are pictured in the gallery below. A plug for a trickle charger has been installed under the left headlight, and a Motor Trend “1985 Car of the Year” sticker is affixed to the rear glass.

Trim includes an optional sunroof, black fender trim, a chin spoiler, a rear hatch spoiler, and red accents on the grille, side moldings, and bumpers. The seller notes the black rear window surround has visible peeling on both lower corners. Bottlecap 14″ alloy wheels are wrapped in 185/60 Vredestein Sportrac5 tires that were installed following the last auction and show 2021 date codes. Braking is handled by disc brakes at each corner and the seller notes the parking brake was adjusted in preparation for the sale.

Gray cloth with patterned inserts covers the front sport seats and split-folding rear bench, and Volkswagen-branded rubber mats line the floors. Equipment includes crank windows, and a Blaupunkt Frankfurt AM/FM radio. The seller notes the sunroof handle sits off-center when the sunroof is closed.

A four-spoke leather steering wheel frames VDO instrumentation that includes a 220-km/h speedometer, a tachometer with a 6,300-rpm redline, a shift light, inset auxiliary gauges, warning lights, a multi-function digital display, and a digital clock. Just over 59k kilometers (~37k miles) are shown on the six-digit odometer, 3k of which have been added by the seller. The seller notes the fuel sending unit was replaced under current ownership.

The 1.8-liter SOHC inline-four features Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and was rated at 100 horsepower and 107 lb-ft of torque when new. The timing belt, tensioner, water pump, valve cover gasket, idle speed regulator, spark plugs, oxygen sensor, front engine mount, fuel injectors, and fuel distributor were replaced before the last auction, and work since that time included an oil change and replacing the oil pan gasket.

Power is sent to the front wheels via a close-ratio five-speed manual transaxle, and the seller states the shifter linkage was rebuilt and the CV boots have been replaced in preparation for the sale. Replacement Volkswagen mufflers were also fitted under previous ownership, though the seller notes a hole in the rear muffler. 

Manufacturer’s literature, magazines, and service records are included in the sale along with two keys. The sales contract lists optional equipment and an MSRP of $12,085 CAD before taxes.

The  Carfax report shows history in Quebec, Ontario, Ohio, and Michigan and lists no accidents or other damage through its most recent update in March 2019.
