Description
This 1989 Volkswagen Golf GTI 16V was acquired by the current owner in 2022 and repainted in red before it was subsequently fitted with European-style headlights and a revised front fascia. Additional work performed involved installing Bilstein shocks and struts as well as replacing various seals and timing, brake, clutch, and cooling system components. The car is powered by a 1.8L 16-valve inline-four paired with a five-speed manual transaxle, and it rides on 15″ BBS RA wheels mounted over four-wheel disc brakes. Further equipment includes HELLA driving lights, a rear spoiler, Recaro front bucket seats trimmed in gray cloth, air conditioning, and a Sony CD stereo. Now showing 114k miles, this MK2 GTI is offered by the seller on behalf of its current owner with a clean Carfax report, repaint photos, and a clean New York title in the current owner’s name.
The car was refinished in red under current ownership, at which time European-style headlights with HELLA driving lights along with a later-model front fascia were retrofitted. Additional details include a rear spoiler, red-accented bumpers, black wheel arch flares, dual side mirrors, and a rear window wiper. A replacement hood seal was fitted, and the headlight bulbs, backup light switch, and washer fluid pump were replaced.
BBS RA 15″ alloy wheels are mounted with 205/50 Kumho Ecsta PA31 tires. The car is equipped with Bilstein shocks and struts, and braking is provided by discs at all four corners. The tie rods, front control arms and ball joints, brake master cylinder, and rear brake calipers were replaced under current ownership.
The interior was retrofitted with Recaro front bucket seats upholstered in gray cloth which are joined by a color-coordinated rear bench seat. GTI-branded floor mats line the footwells, and appointments include air conditioning, a removable rear cargo cover, and a Sony CD stereo.
The four-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel frames a 140-mph speedometer, a tachometer, a digital clock, and auxiliary gauges for fuel level and coolant temperature. The six-digit mechanical odometer shows 114k miles, approximately 1,500 of which have been added under current ownership.
The 1.8-liter DOHC inline-four features four valves per cylinder and was factory rated at 123 horsepower and 120 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels through a five-speed manual transaxle. Service performed under current ownership involved replacing the following components:
- Coolant hoses
- Thermostat
- Radiator
- Water Pump
- Timing components
- Drive belts
- Spark plugs
- Fuel pump relay
- Rear main and camshaft seals
- Throttle body, intake manifold, cold start valve, and crankcase gaskets
- Transmission main shaft seal
- Clutch components
