Audi TT-Swapped Euro 1988 Volkswagen Golf GTI
This 1988 Volkswagen Golf GTI is a European-market example that was acquired by the Greece-based seller circa 2008 and has since been fitted with the powertrain and interior of a 2003 Audi TT. Description
This 1988 Volkswagen Golf GTI is a European-market example that was acquired by the Greece-based seller circa 2008 and has since been fitted with the powertrain and interior of a 2003 Audi TT. Refinished in blue over black leather, car is powered by a 20-valve 1.8L inline-four that is fitted with a larger-than-stock turbocharger and fuel injectors and paired with a five-speed manual transaxle. Additional equipment includes Schmidt Revolution 16″ wheels, MKIII Golf VR6 front and rear subframes, chassis bracing, heated front seats, air conditioning, power windows, an OMP steering wheel, and an aftermarket intercooler and exhaust. Previously listed on BaT in January 2025, this TT-swapped MKII Golf is now offered at no reserve in Athens, Greece, with a Greek registration certificate in the seller’s name.
The car is said to have been stripped to bare metal and repainted under current ownership, at which time the front fenders, exterior lighting and black plastic trim pieces were replaced. GTI variants of the MKII Golf featured a red stripe around the grille as well as unique badging. The windshield has been replaced.
Schmidt Revolution 16″ wheels measure 9″ wide and are wrapped in 205/45 tires. Modifications include 312mm front brake rotors sourced from an Audi TT as well as the following:
- MKIII Golf VR6 front and rear subframes
- TSI axles
- Ultra Racing front subframe four-point brace
- OMP front and rear shock tower braces
- Bilstein B8 dampers
- Eibach springs
An Audi TT dashboard and seats have been installed, the latter of which are upholstered in black leather and feature functional heating elements. Additional equipment includes custom door panels, an Audi TT center console, power windows, air conditioning, a sunroof, and an alarm system. A B&M short shifter has been added. A tear on one of the driver’s seat seams is noted.
The three-spoke OMP steering wheel sits ahead of Audi TT instrumentation including a 160-mph speedometer and a 7k-rpm tachometer. The odometer shows 92k kilometers (~57k miles), approximately 4k of which were added under current ownership.
The turbocharged 1.8-liter inline-four features five valves per cylinder and was sourced from a 2003 Audi TT according to the seller. The battery has been relocated to the trunk, and the windshield washer fluid bottle has been removed. The car was reportedly tuned by TT Team in Athens, Greece, and additional modifications include the following:
- Aftermarket engine wiring harness & wideband O2 sensors
- K064 turbocharger
- Uprated fuel injectors
- NGK R8 ignition coils
- NGK R8 fuel pump
- Aftermarket intercooler & piping
An oil and filter change was performed in preparation for the sale.
Power is sent to the front wheels through an 02J five-speed manual transaxle.
